Lordships of the Manor and Scottish Feudal Baronies

As with Coats of Arms, a Lordship of the Manor is an 'Incorporeal Hereditiment' - an intangible asset that can pass to any of the title holders descendants whether in the male or female line.  With very few exceptions, present day lordships simply consist of a bundle of rights including fishing, hunting, common waste, minerals, markets & fairs and foreshores.  In other instances there is the right to appoint a gamekeeper.

There are different types of lordship:

1.     Lordships of a single manor
2.     Lordships of a honour or baron
3.     Lordships of a hundred or borough

2 and 3 consisted of groups of manors and are much more sort after than 1.

Determining what is available to buy can be difficult because so many have had multiple owners.  Ideally you should buy from the original owner but this is not always possible.  However, the most important thing to remember is to make sure that you obtain a clear proof of title, preferably the original grant from the crown or alternatively the relevant entry from the Domesday Book.

If you are interested in purchasing a lordship, please fill in the questionnaire. If you require more detailed information then please send an e-mail.

All titles for sale come the most impeccable sources and all have only had one previous owner.  Some have certain rights attached to them including fishing and rights over common land.  The research that is necessary in order to prepare these titles for sale is painstaking and meticulous and this is reflected in the price.  They range in price from £5,000 up to £50,000 in the case of lordships and sometimes more.  Feudal baronies can cost from £10,000 up to one million.  Again, some have surviving feudal rights attached to them and can often come with land attached.
